DALLAS – Following a career game against the No. 2-ranked Clemson Tigers, Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond was named to the Davey O'Brien Award's Great 8 list, the award's selection committee announced Monday.
Mond passed for a career-high 430 yards and three touchdowns on 23-of-40 attempts in the Aggies' narrow 28-26 loss to the Tigers. In the second half, the San Antonio native torched the vaunted Clemson defense for 333 yards, the most-ever in a half by a Texas A&M QB.
Mond gave the Aggies a chance to tie the game in the fourth quarter, throwing for 206 yards and two touchdowns, the second most in school annuals behind Jerrod Johnson's 219 yards against Oklahoma State in 2010. With 46 seconds left in the game, he connected with Kendrick Rogers on a 24-yard pass to pull the Aggies within two.
Mond joined Johnny Manziel, Kenny Hill and Ryan Tannehill as the only Aggie QBs with 400-yard passing games against AP Top 25 opponents. His 430 yards rank second in program history against an AP top five opponent.
Joining Mond on the list are Houston's D'Eriq King, Oklahoma's Kyler Murray, Arizona State's Manny Wilkins, Colorado's Steven Montez, Georgia's Jake Fromm, Kentucky's Terry Wilson and USF's Blake Barnett.
The winner of the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback of the Week Award, which will be one of the week's "Great 8" quarterbacks, will be announced Thursday on the Punt & Pass Podcast.
